Sometimes we feel guilty when we shouldn*t and sometimes we don*t feel guilty when we should. That old adage let your conscience be your guide can be a good thing or a bad thing. Did you ever have anyone try to make you feel guilty because you didn*t do what THEY wanted? God does that to us and Satan imitates Him. God wants us to feel guilty when we sin and Satan wants us to feel guilty when we do what is right. Some Christians have tried to make me feel guilty about my sin and individuals in Satan*s service have tried to make me feel guilty about serving God. Our guilt can be used to control us. God wants to use it for good and Satan wants to use it for evil. We can feel guilty about the right things and we can feel guilty about the wrong things. There is useful guilt and there is harmful guilt. We can learn whether our guilt is useful or harmful according to who is trying to make us feel guilty. The best way to know if our guilty conscience is right or wrong is to apply Bible principles to whatever it is that we feel guilty about. Without Bible truth our feelings are unreliable. Harmful drugs can feel just about as good as useful ones. 2 Timothy 4:2: Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.There is no season when God*s Word is not relevant, useful and necessary. Satan would like us to feel guilty about including quotes from the Bible in any and all of our conversations. God would like us to feel guilty when we exclude the Bible. Satan would like us to feel guilty when we preach. God would like us to feel guilty when we don*t. Satan would like us to feel guilty when we reprove and rebuke Biblically. God would like us to feel guilty when we don*t. Satan would like us to feel guilty when we are patient and Biblically doctrinal. God would like us to feel guilty when we aren*t. Hebrews 10:22: Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water. 2 Corinthians 5:17: Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.One of the things that Jesus made new for me when I received Him was my conscience. It brings me to repentance and I must keep it functioning properly by confessing my sin and knowing the Bible. If He has never given you a wiser and more sensitive conscience, something is wrong. 1 Corinthians 11:31: For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged. |
